Our Philosophy of Treatment

The Northeast Catholic Counseling Center is committed to providing quality counseling in a supportive atmosphere. Our service is unique in its ecumenism, professionalism and dedication to serving individuals from various economic conditions.

We believe the counseling process takes into account all aspects of the individual: Physical, Emotional, Spiritual and the Social Environment in both the past and present.

The direct and informed participation of the client is crucial to counseling. At all times the therapist strives to fully involve the client in the responsibility and direction of the treatment process. Because each person is unique, we offer a variety of treatment styles.

Our goal is to compassionately share our knowledge and resources both with the client and the community.

Our History

18 years of service and counting..

In the early 1980's, Oregon experienced its worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. Much of the population on Portland's east side was particularly hard hit. The area lost family-wage jobs in mills, construction and logging. Retailers, restaurateurs and other service providers felt the pinch and either scaled back on help or closed altogether. Although some improvements were being seen in the economy by the mid-80's, the hard times were taking a tremendous toll on families.

Recognizing that people have many needs, five parishes in northeast Portland pooled their limited financial resources to offer professional, affordable counseling. They poured their time and energy into a fledgling counseling center that eventually became the Northeast Catholic Counseling Center.

The parishes donated use of their offices to contain costs, hoping no one would be turned away because of finances. Two counselors were hired in 1986. As word spread, the Center started to grow and two part-time counselors were added later that year. The Center raised its level of professionalism by applying for and receiving State Certification in 1989.

Through steady Growth, it became clear to the Board of Directors that the Northeast Catholic Counseling Center needed to expand beyond the space available in the parish offices. In 1992, the Center acquired its own status as a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation and began renting space at its current location on Sandy Boulevard. Within a few years, the Center held contracts with most major insurance companies in the state.

Today the Northeast Catholic Counseling Center remains faithful to the original vision and mission of its founders. It is a Christian based, professional, organization committed to providing mental health services to all people regardless of race, religion or financial means. The staff has grown to four full-time licensed, two part-time counselors, two interns, one full time administrative assistant and and part-time office assistant.

Programs have grown, too. Added to individual, couple and family counseling, the Center provides a variety of services to the Portland community. The premarital program for couples has increased each year. A special commitment to partnering with single mothers and children offers stability, hope and skills. Principals and teachers can consult with the counselors regarding various classroom situations and student needs. Special workshops and seminars are available upon request and the Center operates ongoing couples communication classes. A counselor-training program collaborates in training interns with three local universities and colleges.
